Start with the garment fabric and position
First identify the fabric and the place where the trim will be used. A lace trim at a neckline may need a different edge expression from a trim joined into a seam. A hem or cuff may need a more continuous visual line, while a small decorative detail may need a narrower proportion.
- Is the lace visible as an edge, enclosed in a seam, or inserted into the fabric?
- Will the garment move with the body or remain relatively stable?
- Should the trim feel light and soft, or hold a clearer edge?
- How much of the lace width will remain visible after installation?

Check stretch, width and edge shape
Stretch and recovery, visible width, edge shape and installation method should be checked on an actual sample. Do not infer stretch performance from a category name. Mark the seam allowance and fold position on a short installation sample before approving the direction.
- Stretch and recovery: confirm whether the trim must extend and recover with the fabric, and record the direction tested.
- Width and visible proportion: compare nominal width with the width that remains visible after sewing.
- Edge shape: record whether the sample has a narrow floral edge, wavy edge or double-sided decorative edge.
- Installation method: test a joined seam, applied edge or insert on the real or representative garment fabric when relevant.

Pre-sampling checklist
